I forgot my passwordStudents in New York Log Over One Billion Steps
by Chris Culbertson, posted May 19th 2009, 15:03
I found an interesting story a few weeks back where 5th graders in Arizona logged steps and accumulated over 5.4 Billion Steps. Then this morning, I came across a story about students in New York logging over 1 Billion Steps.
“Nearly 270 classes from Yonkers, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany logged more than 1.4 billion steps during the six-week program. (It would take one person 27 years of continuous walking to match that.)” read full article
I am very enthused to see these numbers. In the upcoming fall semester we are going to be host of a walking program for Elementary Schools in Lee’s Summit. They will be logging steps during PE class and the winning schools will be awarded grant money for their PE department!
The steps from the students will also go toward the Lee’s Summit Billion Step Challenge which will help our totals as the year is coming to an end. The thing I learned most from the stories I have read is that the power is in the numbers. If we can get more than 1,000 people logging their steps each and every day, we will hit the goal of 1 Billion Steps both in Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs!
Help us spread the word to get people walking and logging steps. How neat would it be, if the students put us over the 1 Billion Steps during their program? They would think that it was so neat that they were such a huge part of an unbelievable community wide initiative.
Feel free to share ways that we can help get the word out to more walkers in our comments.
