Caleb – Avid Runner
Please tell us about your training over the past week…
This week my mileage lowered a little because I went to Chicago to run the inaugural rock and roll half marathon. So my mileage was at 40 miles this week. It consisted of a long run (12), a medium run (8), and the rest just easy runs.
What was the hardest part of the week? What was the easiest?
Hardest part- Getting enough rest before the big race while traveling
Easiest part- running lower miles for the week
Bonus question: Is there something you absolutely have to have to do your workout?
Dri-fit socks(very important to me)/shirt/shorts. I like to run with my Garmin as well!
Caleb had a race this weekend; we would love to hear about it:
The Chicago rock-n-roll half marathon went well. I ran a 1:14:54 and got 19th overall out of roughly 15,000 people. My girlfriend who I train with was the second place female with a time of 1:21:48. Good day for both of us.

I focused on getting some workouts finished in the morning since I haven’t had much luck energetically working out after work. The plan was pretty successful and I was able to get a run in each morning I was on the road this week. The runs were only 30 minutes each, but that was helpful in getting me up and out since I knew I didn’t have to go very far. I was able to find a nice loop close to the hotel where I am staying with little traffic and sidewalks. In addition to running, I added a lot of stretching because I knew I would be very sore and wanted to prevent pulling something.
What was the hardest part of the week? What was the easiest?
This was one of the first weeks of what I hope will become my routine and the hardest part was simply trying to get up and stay motivated. I am sure that it will become an easier habit over time. But I was finding plenty of reasons to not get out and run. I had planned to do a few longer runs over the weekend, but failed to get out and do them. I went to a wedding Saturday night which cemented not doing anything on Sunday and even took a step backward.
Bonus question: Is there something you absolutely have to have to do your workout?
I actually don’t need anything to run and sometime I actually even like running without music as it gives me a chance to really clear my mind. Although, I think this is probably just an excuse I use since my iPod is never charged and when I can sometimes use it, the music hasn’t been changed since grunge was cool.

Monday-7.5 miles–this has been my longest run so far. Tuesday- easy 3 mile run to recover. Wednesday- 5 mile run. Thursday I left for vacation and I took the day off. Friday- 2.5 miles and swimming. Saturday- still on vacation, did some swimming. Sunday- day off, home from vacation and exhausted.
This past week definitely was NOT my best training week since I was on vacation. Next week I will be back on track.
I usually run Sunday-Thursday, take Friday off and do cross-training (biking usually) on Saturdays.
What was the hardest part of the week? What was the easiest?
Mondays and Saturdays are my hardest days. Mondays are because that’s when I do my longer runs, and Saturdays because it’s really hard for me to get motivated to work out on the weekend. The easiest days were my shorter runs, which I run at a slower pace to recover from the longer runs the day before.
Bonus question: Is there something you absolutely have to have to do your workout?
I always run with my ipod attached to my Nike+ to measure my distance/pace. Also, I usually wear a hat–it keeps my hair out of my face and keeps me cool on hot days.

Please tell us about your training over the past week…
It has been pretty sparse. I have had a lot of work and and put in a lot of hours over the past week. Knowing it was going to be a week like that, I was able to plan a head to some degree. So, I did a lot of smaller workouts and fit them in when I could. I did several sets of push ups and pull ups with different grips at different times throughout the day. I worked in some ab work outs at least once a day. I was able to go for a run two different days for 30-40 minutes. Any p90x workouts were just done in spurts or half of the video at a time. I think this actually worked out a little better for me since I had been getting so sore from doing the entire videos. Maybe this is a good way to get me back into hard workouts and not have it completely own me. I also took Olivia to the pool twice and took a few minutes to myself to get some laps in. Man did it ware me out quick; it has been a while since I swam hard.
What was the hardest part of the week? What was the easiest?
The hardest part was finding the time. Like I said I had a lot of work to get done, but I knew it was coming so I was able to plan a bit. I knew that there was not a good chance that I would get an hour straight, each day to do a full p90x workout so I did half videos at a time and worked in some abs and a couple of runs. The easiest part was that I did not get so sore from the workouts so I was actually able to use my arms this week. haha
Bonus question: Is there something you absolutely have to have to do your workout?
Depends on the workout. When I do the p90x, I listen to the video and use the equipment necessary. When I go for a run or do a run or do something on my own, I love to have my iPhone and my watch. My iPhone has my music on it and I have an app I can use to keep track of my run using the built in GPS. I can tell how far I ran, what my average pace was and at any time during my run, I can see my current pace compared to my average pace. My watch has a stop watch and a timer on it, so I can use either to track my runs much easier. My iPhone is around my arm, so it is easier to check my wrist for quick updates.
Aubrey – Busy Mom
Please tell us about your training over the past week…
Last week my training was simple and light because of my Saturday race.
Monday- biked 8 miles, jogged 2 miles
Tuesday- 1 hour weight class, 15 minute swim in the morning, yoga class in evening
Wednesday- 4 mile jog
Thursday- 1 hour weight class
Friday- rest
Saturday- Triathlon! (500 swim, 10 mile bike, 3.2 mile run)
Sunday- rest
What was the hardest part of the week? What was the easiest?
The hardest part of last week’s workouts was the race! Other than that,Tuesday’s yoga class was actually hard because I had worked out in the morning and I was exhausted. I couldn’t go to my usually relaxing Thursday evening class, so I went to a different one and I was really feeling it!
Bonus question: Is there something you absolutely have to have to do your workout?
For each different exercise, I have something I love. Biking, my new Giant bike from Bike Stop. Running- Patagonia under ware from Gary Gribbles (don’t laugh- they are awesome!) I love to do weights class in these Under Armor black stretchy leggins. I love to wear burn out shirts to do yoga in- they are from the actual Studio. I have a long torso, so most shirts are too short when I raise my arms up and I don’t want people seeing my belly!
I don’t like to run with an I Pod. It’s my only quiet time, so I like to just run and listen to what’s going on around me.
Aubrey had a race this weekend. We would love to hear about it.
My race was a lot of fun but also challenging. The swim was, as expected, my hardest event. I didn’t prepare for the excitement when starting the swim. The people yelled Go! so I ran into the water and started swimming. I was out of breath and really excited, so it was hard to catch my breath and calm down in the water.
The bike ride and run were enjoyable. My goal was 1 1/2 hours and I finished in 1 hour 23 minutes, so I was happy with my time.
If any woman in interested in trying a triathlon, you should definitely look into the Women’s Win for KC. It was a perfect first race! Now it’s time for the KC 1/2 marathon in October!!!
