Let’s see how this last week went. Happy 1st of September!

brianBrian – Weekend Warrior

Tell us about your training this week.
My training this week was non-existent. The only real activity I did was mowing the grass, and although I have a push mower, it doesn’t really qualify as a workout. I am still tracking my steps on a daily basis with my pedometer but my steps are slightly down as well. Last week I averaged about 7500 steps per day. Primarily my lack of exercise was driven by a heavy workload at the office. As I am wrapping up a project at work, I have not been even getting a half hour run each day, which is my minimum target. I know that it is hard to justify not having the time to do 30 mins but I promise I can give at least 30 mins worth of excuses for skipping each day, and by time I am done with my excuses, there really is no time to work out.

What was the hardest part of your week, the easiest?
The hardest part of the past week was eating right. Normally when I fall off the exercise wagon I focus on eating right so that I don’t take a giant step backward. This week it was a real challenge to find time to eat right as well and I had to resort to more fast food than I would like to eat. This is always a challenge when I am traveling heavily for work but I normally do a decent job about just managing my total intake.

It seems like we have reached about the halfway point in training for our blogger’s events. How would you rate your progress? Do you feel like you are getting prepared for your event?
I am not at all where I hoped to be at the mid-point. But the good news is that all is not lost. This is why I really need an event like the KC Half Marathon to keep me on track. While I will have some slow periods like the last few weeks, the added incentive of having to actually enter a race and run in front of other people helps to prioritize exercise and fitness over some of the other things going on. I am still confident that I have time to perform at an acceptable pace for my race. And while I think I could have done better, I know that if I had not entered for the race at all I wouldn’t be even doing as well as I have.

Tell us about your training this week.
Things went pretty well through the week and come Friday, my shoulder started hurting again. I got another round of cortisone and hope it helps while I take it easy on my shoulder. I am hoping I don’t have to get a shot or any further treatment than that. The problem is that I (I know this sounds weird) was shot 3 years ago and because the bullet is still in my arm, I am unable to have an MRI done. I have really begun to concentrate on my diet and continue to run. Since I cannot lift or do the p90x, I figure my diet is even more crucial leading up to the big day. I timed myself in a mile run and hit 7:15, which I thought was okay. Kind of fun since I had not timed myself in a mile since 8th grade.

What was the hardest part of your week, the easiest?
Shoulder felt great and I went at it during the week. My fiance to be has been running a lot and that motivates me to do more. The hardest part is mental for me. When my shoulder started hurting again, I get worried that it is serious and frustrated that it sets me back a bit and limits my abilities.

I have mixed feelings. I have not stuck to a regular routine whatsoever, but I have been doing quite a bit to change how active I am in my regular life. I feel those are the things that will stick with me forever and that I can continue to build upon even after the wedding. My weight is under 195, which is awesome but I am a little further away from where I would like to be right now.

Tell us about your training this week.
This past week had its ups and downs… I broke my wrist, so I took a couple of days off for swelling to go down, and then I had to buckle down and get my miles in. I ran 50 miles last week, and that was 15 less than I wanted/needed.

What was the hardest part of your week, the easiest?
The hardest part for me this past week was my long run (20 miles), once I got past about 17 miles my body just kinda began to ache….it was tough to push through
The easiest part was only running 50 miles last week and having 4 days to run 30 miles, because i knocked out 20 in one day.

I feel that training isn’t going exactly as planned. I’ve had some hurdles to jump over, but all in all i am happy with my training thus far. We are going to be prepared to run the goal pace we have set out to run for our marathon (so no excuses for us). Prior to getting into our training we planned and expected to have some hurdles and setbacks (we did hoped for no hurdles or set backs :-) ). Unfortunately it’s more uncommon to have everything go as planned than it is to go as planned…

Tell us about your training this week.
Same as last week, running 3-5 miles about 3 or 4 times a week. Everything is going good, knee is back in good shape, loving the cooler weather! Need to pick up my miles again, but I’m going to do it more gradually this time. I think my knee injury was due to increasing my miles way to quickly.

What was the hardest part of your week, the easiest?
The easiest part was running in this beautiful weather!! The hardest part was the speed/hill workout I did. I’ve been running around some really hilly neighborhoods around the Plaza and they are brutal! One biker rode past me and said “Good job, you’re surviving the Missouri Alps!” which I thought was funny :)

I think my training is going OK, but not excellent. I feel like I am getting prepared for my event, but I still have a lot of training to do. I also just figured out my fiancee’s best friend’s wedding is the night before the half marathon.. so the race should be quite interesting–probably will not get the ideal rest I need the night before. I am looking for other races to run in November which I will focus more on time.
