Okay, so let’s talk about the elephant in the room. The period of time (pun intended) where some women say don’t even know whether they are going or coming, if they are hot or cold, hungry or sleepy, angry or happy. This is a fate that a woman living past their reproductive years can avoid. Let’s view this as just what it is, a “natural aging process”.
What do I think? I say, embrace it, learn from it, grow from it. There are lessons in each season of our lives. Menopause is not a defeat; it is a journey. We just need to understand that some journeys are rockier than others, but it’s up to the traveler to determine how she comes out at the end.
Menopause is generally divided into three stages: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopausal.
Perimenopause: This is the transitional stage leading up to menopause. It typically begins several years before menopause when the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen. This stage can last anywhere from a few months to several years. Symptoms during perimenopause can include irregular menstrual cycles, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and changes in libido.
Menopause: Menopause is officially defined as the point when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. The average age of menopause in the United States is around 51, but it can occur as early as 45 for some women. During menopause, the ovaries stop releasing eggs and producing most of their estrogen and progesterone. Symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood
changes, forgetfulness and sleep disturbances may continue during this stage.
Postmenopausal: Postmenopausal refers to the time after menopause has occurred. At this stage, the symptoms experienced during perimenopause and menopause often decrease in severity. However, postmenopausal women are at an increased risk for certain health conditions, such as osteoporosis and heart disease, due to the decrease in estrogen levels. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or other
treatments may be recommended to manage symptoms and reduce long-term health risks.
Each woman's experience with menopause can vary widely in terms of the duration and severity of symptoms. It's essential for women approaching or experiencing menopause to consult with healthcare professionals to understand their individual needs and explore options for symptom management and overall health maintenance.
